Energy Live reports that IKEA’s research labs are currently testing out a combination of solar and blockchain technologies on a miniature scale. So miniature, in fact, that they have built a small neighbourhood kitted with solar panels and blockchain technology. Aptly dubbed SolarVille, the 1:50 scale town is completely self-sufficient on solar energy.
Blockchain technology is used to sell and purchase energy from other community members. The research is being done by IKEA’s research wing, SPACE10. During March, members of the public can view SolarVille on display at the SPACE10 Gallery in Copenhagen.
The experiment demonstrates that real-life microgrids like SolarVille could be created to provide a more efficient, local and ecological energy source in the near future.
