French Tobacconists Start Selling Bitcoins

For those around Paris, that long-awaited moment of being able to purchase Bitcoin (BTC) along with a pack of fags has become a reality. Reported yesterday by Reuters, Keplerk–a fintech company–have now installed 6 Bitcoin ATM units around Paris. They hope to have 4,500 Tabacs (tobacconist shops) enrolled by February.

Some people find it complicated to get bitcoins on-line.

They trust their local tobacco shop owner more than they would trust some remote anonymous website.

Despite the current regulatory question marks, as French tobacco sales have dwindled, France’s 24,000 Tabacs have looked to diversify their offerings into prepaid cards, money transfer services and now Bitcoin buying and selling.

From our experience at bitfudge, we are happy to see diversification and Bitcoin ATMs being made available to retail customers.

However, when we checked out local ATMs the fees were generally higher than transacting online. Despite this, for Parisians concerned about privacy, buying digital assets just became a whole lot easier.
